Byetta, manufactured and distributed by Eli Lily and Amylin Pharmaceuticals, is prescribed for patients with Type 2 Diabetes to control blood sugar levels. The drug is typically injected twice a day to boost insulin levels in the blood. Patients using Byetta have reported suffering mild to severe side effects, and six patients have died in connection with the drug. Severe side effects include various types of pancreatitis, including acute, hemorrhagic, and necrotizing pancreatitis, which can be fatal if not treated immediately. A national Byetta drug warning was issued by the FDA in 2007 and 2008, and the drug's manufacturers are now required to include stricter warming labels on the drug's packaging.
