Lipitor, manufactured and heavily marketed by Pfizer, is a widely used drug that is prescribed to lower cholesterol levels. Lipitor is only one of many drugs known as statins, which block the production of certain enzymes in the body. Several class action lawsuits claim that Pfizer provided consumers with inaccurate and incomplete information regarding the effectiveness and risks of taking the drug. One line of cases claims that even though Pfizer knew that Lipitor was less effective in women and in people over 65, the company failed to publicize this information in order to maximize profits, thereby exposing certain individuals to unnecessary risks. Another vein of lawsuits claims that the drug company downplayed the risk of serious, sometimes permanent, side effects in a small number of patients.
